People in Glasgow name their favourite chip shop

Nothing quite beats a fish supper and we are pretty sure Glasgow has some of the best chippies in the world - but then we are biased. 

So on this National Fish and Chip Day - which has taken place a little later than planned this year because of the coronavirus pandemic - we are celebrating the best in Glasgow according to our readers.

Steph Munday declared that Hooked in Mount Florida is 'outstanding'.

The Cathcart Road eatery previously appeared in our Times Takeaway review which read: "Hooked is popular in the South Side because they offer things you don't get in most traditional chippies.

"Your food is cooked in rapeseed oil and as you order it.

"Some of the highlights on their menu include mac and cheese balls, fish pakora and even veggie haggis."

Nicky Paddi Kelly believes he may have found the East End's best-kept secret - Mario 'N' Andy's on Dalmarnock Road.

He said 'Best wee chippy,' before adding that it had been in the area for years and offers 'great food'.

Elle McGill offered up Mario's in Bridgeton as her favourite saying: "Amazing food and lovely welcoming staff."

Meanwhile, in the West End, Michelle Wilkie said Old Salty's on Byres Road is a top chippie.

She said the staff are 'brilliant' and 'they sell cod lots of chippies don't'.

She added: "It's reasonably priced too."

Linda Scaramuzza concurred: "Best service and staff. Lovely fish and chips. It is the best, never a bone in the fish, it is so thick and delicious."

While Jennifer Kelly offered up city centre favourite the Blue Lagoon.

She said: "No explanation needed."

Pamela Hamilton agreed: "Blue Lagoon, St Enoch's Centre. Amazing."

A list like this would of course always feature city institution Coronation which is based in the Gallowgate.

Situated in the area since 1939, this chip shop has served generations of Glasgow families.

Connor Weston said: "Coronation (cheap chippie) at the Gallowgate under four beans for a lunchtime supper."

Another city instutution mentioned was Jaconellis on Maryhill Road with Lisa Steele suggesting you should order steak pie, chips and pea instead of the traditional supper.

Maryhill's Codfather also topped the list with Moria Milne saying: "The Codfather's fish and chips are amazing."

Barry McGloan, however, believes he has found the holy grail of chippies in 727 Great Western Road.

He said: "The best white chips in Glasgow."

Alison Scullion added: "The 727 on Great Western Road is the best chippy in Glasgow."

Barry, however, wasn't too impressed with some of our readers other suggestions adding: "Amazing seeing some people's idea of a good chippy, clocked about three rotten ones people think are nice."

Shawlands-based Salt n Vinegar was voted by several readers.

Winifred Watt said: "Always fresh and tasty. Good size portions and lots of choice."

Catriona Ward was among several readers who mentioned Merchant chippie on Ingram Street.
