SECTIONS of the A1 will be closed overnight in September and October as part of £750,000 resurfacing works.

Twelve nights of overnight roadworks are planned from September 13, with the work split into two parts of the busy road.

The eastbound section between the Oaktree and Abbotsview junctions will be closed from 7.30pm to 6am on September 13-17, as well as September 22.

A diversion route will be signposted via the A199, adding about two miles and 10 minutes to affected journeys on those nights.

The second section of works takes place between the Bankton and Gladsmuir junctions on September 23 and 24 and from September 29 to October 2.

Again, a diversion route along the A199 will be signposted, with the section of the A1 closed between 7.30pm and 6am.

The projects have been planned in consultation with East Lothian Council and will see more than 3.5 kilometres of the road resurfaced.

Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s south east operating company representative, said: “These essential surfacing projects will improve the condition of the road surface and road safety across these two sections of the A1, benefitting road users for years to come.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we work on these projects.

“We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
