MANY of my constituents will be delighted with the news that gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres can reopen very soon, providing they follow the relevant guidance.

I understand that for many, gyms and swimming pools offer important benefits for both physical and mental health. It has not been easy having these establishments closed for so long, but it has been a necessary precaution to ensure the health of the public is protected. Driving lessons have also been allowed to recontinue. I am sure that these are welcome announcements and I encourage constituents to make the most of these services reopening, whilst remembering to stick to any guidance to keep themselves and others safe.

Last week, it was announced that the plans to build a McDonald’s in Musselburgh were rejected by East Lothian Council. I am sure that most residents will be pleased with this news, given the huge amount of correspondence I received from constituents expressing their concerns on this issue. It is my belief that planning should prioritise the views of those who live in the area, and I am glad that this has happened in this scenario.

This development would have likely resulted in increased litter, traffic congestion and worsened pollution. Large companies such as McDonald’s may also draw customers away from the ample number of local cafes and restaurants in Musselburgh, who depend on resident custom to thrive. It is my opinion we are much better off supporting our local business owners, rather than forcing them to compete with multi-billion-pound global corporations.

I would like to remind my constituents that although I am not partaking in face-to-face meetings, I continue to operate a telephone surgery to support anyone who may need my assistance at this time. These surgeries will typically be 9-11am on Fridays. To make an appointment, please email colin.beattie.msp@parliament.scot or call 0131 454 0204 and my team will organise an appointment for you.
