A SUB-GROUP of North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership has created an interactive online map detailing where the town’s car parks can be found.

It comes as East Lothian Council’s Spaces for People programme, which aims to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, led to the removal of some parking spaces on the east end of High Street as pavements were widened to benefit pedestrians.

North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership’s On The Move group created and updated the list of parking spaces, which can be found at northberwickparking.org.uk

The map details not only where parking spaces can be found and the capacity at each location, but also where there are electric car charging ports and how long it would take to walk from each car park to North Berwick town centre. However, it does not have ‘live’ information, ie does not tell motorists if a car park is full or not.

Hilary Smith, chair of North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership, said: “This is something we thought of two years ago as a way of trying to get the town ready for summer and the influx of visitors.

“We went round and identified all the car parks and the number of spaces and tried to give a brief indication of their distance from the town centre for people to walk. We tried to publicise it through the networks we had.

“The website gets a lot of traffic, particularly first thing in the morning between 8am and 10am, which means a lot of people are using it to plan their journeys.

“With all of that in mind, we revisited it and put some more places in and got a revamped version of it.”

More places can be added to the map by contacting Hilary or the area partnership with a note of where the car park is and also a picture of it.

Hilary added that she hoped more places in the North Berwick Coastal area, such as Yellowcraig, Gullane and Aberlady, could be also added to the map.
