A SECOND set of plans to turn a former coastguard station into a house has been given the go-ahead.

When Dunbar Coastguard swapped Lamer Street for Spott Road Industrial Estate last year, its former base was left empty. Now, the building overlooking the town’s East Beach could become a new home or holiday let.

Judy Oxley was given planning permission to change the property into holiday accommodation, with the existing roof to be removed, the wall heads raised by one metre and a new roof put in place. The proposals did not, however, win universal approval.

The local authority’s planning department received six letters of objection to the plans.

Grounds for concern included there being no parking for the home, as well as how noise from the building would “negatively impact on neighbouring residential properties”.

Supporting the plans was Dunbar Community Council, which was keen to see the proposals given the go-ahead in order to “regenerate the building and prevent its decay”.

It marks the second time in just a few weeks that Ms Oxley has been given planning permission to breathe new life into the building.

East Lothian Council’s planning officials had previously rejected a bid to turn the building into a bijou beachfront home. However, the local authority’s Local Review Body overturned that decision on appeal when councillors said the proposal was better than leaving the building to fall into a state of disrepair.
