THE speed limit on the main road to one of East Lothian’s largest primary schools could be temporarily reduced under changes being considered by the local authority.

All the roads in the Hallhill area of Dunbar have a 20mph speed limit, with the exception of Kellie Road.

Campaigners have repeatedly called for the road, which links Spott Road and the Lochend campus of Dunbar Primary School, as well as Hallhill Sports Centre, to have a reduced speed limit, rather than the 30mph limit currently in place.

The move has consistently been resisted by East Lothian Council, which earlier this year pointed to a survey which said that 50 per cent of the respondents were against the idea of bringing in a lower speed limit. But now the speed limit could be lowered as part of the measures being weighed up by the council as the county comes out of lockdown.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said: “We are implementing a number of temporary changes in Dunbar as we come out of lockdown.

“This is in order to create physical distancing in streets as daily life is restored, as children return to school and workplaces open.

“Supporting this, we will also improve opportunities for walking and cycling, creating environments that foster healthy and sustainable travel habits.”

Traffic calming measures will be installed on roads throughout the town to enforce the widespread 20 miles per hour limit.

Among the measures being considered is the lowering of the speed limit on Kellie Road, which, it is claimed, would “improve conditions for cyclists”, while a park and stride would be created at the sports centre’s car park.

Other options include closing Hospital Road to traffic to increase space and improve safety for cycling and walking.

Back Road could also become a one-way system to create more space for pedestrians.

Meanwhile, Countess Crescent could be closed to traffic – retaining access to Blue Badge parking – while the road on Lammermuir Crescent and Countess Road could be narrowed, as could Belhaven Road and Summerfield Road.
