LIFEBOAT and Coastguard volunteers were called out three times in just two hours in North Berwick as temperatures rose on Friday afternoon.

With people heading to East Lothian's beaches, the volunteer crews were called out between 2pm and 4pm.

The most serious incident came at about 3pm after reports that someone had fallen from a cliff at Gin Head, to the east of the town.

RNLI and Coastguard volunteers were alerted, with Coastguard colleagues from Fisherrow and Dunbar also called out alongside a rescue helicopter.

As North Berwick Coastguard arrived on scene, its members found the casualty at the bottom of the cliffs.

They treated the individual, where their injuries were found to not be life-threatening, and, with support, they were helped up the cliff to an awaiting ambulance.

The lifeboat crew, which was called at 4pm, was stood down at the scene as North Berwick Coastguard had traced the casualty and had been able to recover them.

The first call out of the day had come at about 2pm after reports of a missing child on the beach.

However, the call was very quickly cancelled as the child had been traced.

An hour later, the crew was then paged to recover a capsized dinghy off Milsey Bay.

The individual in the dinghy, its only occupant, had already been brought to shore by the time the lifeboat crew arrived.

Thankfully, the individual emerged unharmed and the lifeboat crew retrieved the dinghy and a crew member sailed it back to shore.

It marked the start of a busy weekend for the volunteer crews.

On Saturday, at 11.40am, North Berwick Coastguard was called to Longniddry to reports of two people in the water following a capsized dinghy.

Fisherrow Coastguard and Kinghorn RNLI, from Fife, were also called.

After crews arrived on scene, it turned out it was not a dinghy but a kite surfer who had been assisted by fellow kite surfers to safety.

The call was described as a false alarm with good intent.

Shortly after 2pm, the Coastguard team was called to Eyemouth to assist its local coastguard crew with a medical evacuation, however the crew was stood down on route as the individual concerned had been recovered.

A spokesperson for North Berwick RNLI said: “Have fun at the coast but please also take care.

"If you see someone in difficulty call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
