A TRIO of intrepid fundraisers – two of them from Wallyford – are set for an epic challenge in aid of veterans’ charity Erskine.

Stephen Dunn, 46, and his stepson Dillon Thomson, 18, from Wallyford, together with friend Michael Downey, 18, from Edinburgh, are preparing for a loaded march of 100 miles along the West Highland Way.

Their non-stop challenge, ‘The West Highland Way 100’, will start at Erskine Glasgow Home in the early hours of Friday (August 7) and will see them ascending 15,000 feet while carrying 35lb in weight, finishing about 30 hours later in Fort William.

Their loyalty to those who have served in the Armed Forces, which all three have strong connections with, are at the heart of everything they have trained for the past few months, and they are hoping their efforts will raise £3,000 for Erskine.

Dillon was part of 14 Troop Army Cadet Force, based at Goosegreen in Musselburgh, and finished up last year as sergeant major of Kohima Cadet Company – army cadets from Lothian and Borders. He is currently studying engineering at Strathclyde University and has aspirations of joining the armed services after graduating. He is also under the watchful eye of the Training Wing staff at 4 PARA (Reserves) in Glasgow.

Michael, who also served with Kohima Cadet Company, has just started his military career with 2 PARA (The Second Battalion, Parachute Regiment), based at Colchester.

Long-time Erskine supporter Stephen, as well as serving in the Territorial Army (TA), has witnessed the “exceptionally high standard of care” given to his uncle by staff in the charity’s Anniesland home.

Dillon said: “The challenge ahead gives me an opportunity to show my support for those who served our country and to those who provide the vital care for them.

“Our fundraising attempt is our way of contributing to this crucial work.”

Stephen said: “Erskine has a special place in my heart and, having witnessed firsthand the exemplary care given to a member of my own family, the challenge we have set is a way to show our gratitude for the work they continue to do.

“We’re proud to support those who care.”

Michael added: “As a serving soldier, the importance of Erskine can’t be understated. It could easily be me needing that support one day.”

Sara Bannerman, Erskine’s head of fundraising and communications, said: “We would like to thank Stephen, Dillon and Michael for undertaking this extremely challenging event.

“Unwavering support such as this helps us to keep our veterans and their spouses safe, happy and well.

“It is very much appreciated and we wish the team every success on their march.”
