KIND-HEARTED Haddington residents have donated more than £5,000 to an annual charity campaign.

Christian Aid Week, which took place in May, saw Haddington’s churches coming together in a bid to raise money for the global charity.

However, where usually that would mean door-to-door collections, the collectors were faced with a new challenge as coronavirus restrictions saw the campaign move online.

John Weierter, from Haddington’s Christian Aid group, said: “Nationally Christian Aid built an interactive site with streamed worship and various other activities.

“Locally we set up a JustGiving page for the Haddington churches and made arrangements to receive cheques posted directly to Janet Chrystal of St Mary’s, or to Graham Coe of the West Church.

“We then had to wait with bated breath for our faithful supporters to come to us instead of us going out to them.

"We needn’t have worried – £1,405 in cheques/cash was sent to our local collectors, £1,185 was raised via our JustGiving page and we received an incredibly generous cheque for £2,500 from the Church of Christ in Haddington, who had sold their buildings and were dispersing their funds.

"They requested the money be used ‘to help the poor and preach the Gospel’ and this is surely what will happen.”

That took the total to £5,090.

The group’s JustGiving page remains open until tomorrow (Thursday) and can be accessed via justgiving.com/fundraising/haddingtonchurchescagroup
