I agree with Fraser McAllister, whose letter of July 9 described flags as powerful symbols, and understand the importance to East Lothian of the Saltire in particular.
However, few could deny that in recent times both the Union flag and the Saltire have become too closely associated with party politics.
A suggestion to help defuse this rather sorry state of affairs would be for East Lothian Council to revisit their flag protocol and perhaps incorporate the usage of East Lothian’s flag on and outside public buildings.
Further, the county flag would more succinctly and effectively reflect and display civic pride (as opposed to national pride) than either the British or Scottish.
Remember – East Lothian is the birthplace of more than one flag!
