DEMOLITION of the former Wallyford Primary School, which has become a target for vandalism, is resuming as lockdown restrictions ease.

The school at Salters Road was closed after a new £18.9m school was opened early last year at Futures Way to accommodate the influx of families from new housing around the village.

Land was secured on the east side of the town as part of the St Clement’s Wells development to create a new campus to offer room for modern educational facilities for a growing school population.

A spokesman for East Lothian Council said the former school would be knocked down but plans for the future of the site were still to be determined.

He commented: “There have been incidents of unauthorised access and vandalism. Security have been monitoring the site during the lockdown period. Demolition works are resuming.”

He said the contractor was alerted to unauthorised entry to the site recently and it was discovered that windows had been smashed.

A Police Scotland spokesman added: “Police were called around 6.30pm on Saturday, June 27, to reports of youths within a derelict building, formerly Wallyford Primary School; however, following a search of the premises, using the dog unit, there was no trace of anyone within.

"There have been no subsequent reports of vandalism to police from the current owners of the property.

"Officers are liaising with the current owners and would advise local people to avoid the area due to safety concerns with unauthorised access.”
