More than 120 parking fines were handed out over the weekend as East Lothian Council reopened its coastal car parks to the public.

Parking wardens patrolled town centres, beauty spots and surrounding streets issuing penalties to people who parked "inappropriately" and ignored restrictions.

And the fines included, for the first time since lockdown, people who did not pay the daily parking rate to use their coastal car parks after they reopened across the county.

East Lothian Council reopened its larger coastal car parks on Friday, with the £2 daily parking charge back in operation.

Public toilet facilities at the sites remain closed and the local authority urged people only to go to the car parks if they lived locally.

Eleven of the county's coastal car parks charge daily parking charges.

The car parks were closed during lockdown amid concern opening them would encourage daytrippers to travel into the county.

And while some of the council's smaller rural and beach car parks reopened earlier this month the larger ones remained shut until Friday.

Temporary restrictions were also introduced in streets in the coastal village of Gullane where residents had complained about visitors to the beaches parking on the roads around the car parks.

East Lothian Council said  despite warnings to people to stay local coastal areas were busy over the weekend as temperatures soared.

A spokesperson said: "Coastal areas in East Lothian were observed to be busy at the weekend.

"There were 125 penalty charge notices issued. These were issued in town centres as well as at coastal car parks where the required payment for parking had not been made, as well as in relation to inappropriate parking on some nearby roads.

"We continue to support the Scottish Government’s position that people should continue to stay in their local area (broadly within five miles) as much as possible and should not travel further for leisure or recreation.

“While East Lothian’s coastal and countryside car parks are now open for local use, public toilets remain closed.

"This is in line with current governance advice that indoor advice that indoor facilities in outside spaces should remain closed.”
