ROSS High School pupils managed to enjoy their end-of-school prom in lockdown, thanks to a musical brainwave by one of their teachers.

The Tranent school’s S6 students were due to attend their prom at Eskmills, Musselburgh on June 5, but were forced to change their plans due to the coronavirus.

Rather than celebrating their final schooldays together in glitz and glamour, they were instead going to have to mark the end of school at home.

However, one teacher did not want the day to go unnoticed and put together a playlist of teachers’ favourite dance floor anthems.

Nicola Duncan, principal teacher of citizenship, said: “I was out with my mum on a walk and said to her that I needed to do something for the sixth years, and give them a little something after their prom had to be postponed.

“My mum said, ‘What about a little playlist for them?’ and I thought that it was a lovely idea.

“They all enjoy listening to music and celebrating.

“I think everyone got something out of it, I just felt so sorry for them.”

After coming up with the idea, Miss Duncan sent an email to staff at Ross High and invited them to share online a couple of their favourite dance floor songs.

All of the songs were added to a playlist on Spotify, which was later shared on Twitter with the message to the sixth years: “Thinking of you all today!! Until we can celebrate together have a boogie in your living rooms/bedrooms to these.”

Miss Duncan, who also teaches history and modern studies, said: “I think it’s nice, as you’ve got music across all ages; you have some older stuff and some current stuff in there, too.

“It was nice to see them liking it and retweeting it.”

Some pupils put on the dresses and suits they were due to wear at the prom while they listened to the playlist at home.

Lauren Burnett, of Carlaverock View, said: “I decided to wear my dress as me and a couple of friends were a bit upset that it had been postponed, so we dressed up and had our own mini prom with just a couple of us.

“We used some songs off the playlist as well as some of our own favourites.

“It was quite fun to try and guess which teacher had added each song.

“I think the actual day we were meant to be at prom hit me the hardest as it was really awful not seeing my best friends, apart from through a screen.

“But since then I’ve kept myself busy with other work, and come to terms that it’s only postponed, and that prom will happen eventually.”

The 17-year-old, who hopes to study psychology and the classics at the University of St Andrews, admitted that she cried while listening to the playlist and thanked her teachers for making the playlist and for supporting the students.

Ross High School’s prom has been rescheduled for November and Miss Duncan said: “We still want it to go ahead and are going to try and do something like a leaving ceremony for them.”
