Police were called in following concern that nesting birds were being disturbed by grass cutting near Wallyford last week.

East Lothian Council's countryside team was alerted to the work taking place in a field in the Salters Road area.

Social media posts showed a tractor mowing the field, with concern raised about "active skylarks' nests" on land believed to be allocated for new housing.

A council spokesperson later said concern was expressed about disturbing ground nesting birds during the breeding season.

She added: "Local authorities do not have enforcement powers but can advise on best practice. A member of the team spoke to the tractor driver who continued mowing.

"The matter was reported to Police Scotland’s wildlife crime officers who we understand have now inspected the site but found no evidence of any nests being disturbed or destroyed."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "On Thursday, June 11, police received a call regarding the possibility of bird nests being disturbed on ground opposite the Strawberry Garden Centre, Wallyford. Officers attended and enquiries were carried out with no evidence of nesting. Officers provided advice and assistance."
