CONSTRUCTION work on the onshore grid connection to an offshore wind farm has resumed.

Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) windfarm will be erected in the outer Firth of Forth, about 30 kilometres north of Torness Power Station, near Dunbar, and be made up of 54 turbines.

The windfarm is due to be completed in 2023, with work now under way onshore for the grid connection.

Work on the £1.8 billion project had ground to a halt due to the coronavirus.

Now, residents in the East Lammermuir villages have been alerted to work starting again.

The marine cable linking the offshore wind turbines to the National Grid will come ashore at Thorntonloch.

A new substation will be built near Innerwick with the onshore grid connection coming at Crystal Rig Windfarm in the Lammermuir Hills.

Matthias Haag, project director, sent out a letter highlighting that work was due to restart.

He said: “Health and safety is at the forefront of what we do and I want to assure you that, as well as strictly following the Scottish Government guidance, and in particular physical distancing, all workers have been instructed to travel directly to the sites and avoid using any local amenities unless absolutely necessary.

“Initially, we will only have a few people on site to put in place control measures so the rest of the team can start work safely later that week.

“Once that’s happened we will have a reduced workforce on site, including essential supervisory staff.

“The arrangements we have put in place will be under regular review as we continue to closely monitor Covid-19 and follow the Scottish Government’s guidance.”
