A MAN has been charged with driving at more than 100 miles per hour on East Lothian’s busiest road.

Roads policing officers have stopped a number of drivers on the A1 near Gladsmuir in recent weeks.

A police spokesman told the Courier that a 29-year-old man had been stopped on the road travelling at 102 miles per hour.

It is the latest in a number of incidents, with a 48-year-old man stopped doing 99 miles per hour on Wednesday morning.

Officers have been working throughout East Lothian to tackle speeding complaints in recent weeks amid concerns that some motorists will drive quicker on roads that are quieter due to lockdown restrictions.

In particular ‘hot spots’, police have used ‘pop-up’ officers to act as a deterrent to approaching vehicles.

The life-size cut-out versions of officers appear to be holding a pro-laser speed gun and real-life officers will often visit the same locations in a bid to prevent speeding.

The Police Scotland spokesman added: “Local community officers and East Lothian Community Action Team (ELCAT) have received numerous complaints in recent months relating to the speed of vehicles travelling on Beech Terrace, Pencaitland.

“In response to these complaints they gave the area attention over the weekend, with the deployment of the ‘pop up’ police officer on Saturday.

“Officers received positive feedback from local residents in relation to this action, stating they had noticed that it had made a difference to the speed of vehicles on the road.

“On Sunday afternoon, officers conducted a static speed check at the same location.

“Six drivers were warned with regards their speed and manner of driving in line with Road Traffic legislation.”
