A MAJOR police probe into a "serious assault" or "potential abduction" in Greenock this morning has been deemed a 'minor incident'.

Cops rushed to the town's Brachelston Street at around 3.50am today after being alerted to reports a man had been attacked.

Officers said earlier the man had been standing at the junction of Brachelston Street and Murdieston Street when he was approached by a group in a van and then "punched" onto the ground.

Detectives sealed off the street as they launched an investigation into the alleged attack and appealed for the 'victim' to come forward.

But, officers have now confirmed they have spoken to the man and instead deemed the incident as only a "minor disturbance".

A force spokesperson said: "Following our appeal relating to concerns for a man's welfare after reports he was assaulted and potentially abducted, he has been traced safe and well.

"The incident happened on Brachelston Street around 4am this morning.

"Officers are satisfied with the circumstances which have been established as a minor disturbance."
