POGO power is ‘propelling’ two schoolchildren to the top of the world after being inspired by an incredible 100-year-old.

Leo and Ivy Ingham decided to do what they could to support NHS staff and volunteers caring for Covid-19 patients after seeing the efforts of Captain Tom Moore.

The centenarian captured the attention of the British public by walking 100 lengths of his garden, with donations totalling more than £32 million.

Now, the two youngsters are putting a spring in their step by attempting to bounce the same height as the world’s tallest mountain, Everest.

Standing at 8,848 metres, the Gullane Primary School pupils have estimated they will need to complete 80,346 bounces to reach the summit.

Proud dad James said: “Both Ivy and Leo had lockdown birthdays.

“From my parents, Linda and Dave Ingham, who live in Tranent, Ivy got a pogo stick.

“She had never had one before but a friend of hers does and she was quite keen to get one.

“Ivy and Leo started doing it and they heard about Captain Tom raising money for the NHS.

“They wondered if they could do a pogo bounce for the NHS, how many they could do and what would be a reasonable number to do.

“We figured out, if they did 1,000 a day each, it would be possible to do the height of Everest in about six weeks.”

Since then, 10-year-old Leo and younger sister Ivy, 8, have been taking it very seriously to bounce to the challenge.

They measured the height of their average pogo bounce – 11 centimetres – to enable them to calculate how many bounces it would take to reach the same height as the Nepalese mountain.

James told the Courier: “They are completely serious about it.

“People say it is a nice thing to do and they have been going for a week now and are about one-fifth of the way up Everest in a week.

“They are higher than Ben Nevis now [which is 1,380 metres – or 12,545 bounces] and they are pretty fired up about it.”

The youngsters even posted a short video online explaining their challenge, which has caught the attention of members of the public.

Already, the duo have raised more than £1,200.

Their dad added: “They were hoping, originally, to make £100.

“We put the target at £1,000 thinking it is going to take a few weeks for them to do this.

“They smashed £1,000 in three or four days and that keeps them going as well.

“When they see the donations, they are absolutely amazed.

“We tried to manage their expectations but they absolutely smashed £1,000.”
