DELIVERY drivers in North Berwick have been complaining about traffic wardens in the town who are “enthusiastically” issuing parking tickets.

People have taken to social media to express their frustrations, pointing out that, despite delivering and loading food into their vehicles at the time, parking wardens have claimed they are not commercial vehicles and so valid for ticketing.

One man said: “Two different [wardens] at different times told me to move from the loading bay outside Cake. I told them I was loading meals and food from WhyNot? to deliver and was told I wasn’t a commercial vehicle and if I didn’t move I was getting a ticket.

“Are wardens really essential, with the huge decrease in traffic and when the tip isn’t open?”

Another said: “Great to see our essential traffic wardens enforcing the loading-only bays on the High Street.

“Making sure all our busy shops can keep stocked up. Respect.

“Pity he failed to notice that a car was delivering to WhyNot? and couldn’t wait a couple of minutes to speak to the chap. Such a rush to slap a ticket on it.”

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said that people can receive parking tickets if they are wrongly parked in a loading bay.

However, if the car is loading for a business or if the owner can explain a valid reason for being parked there, they can raise this as a concern during an appeal against the ticket.

The spokesperson added: “Inappropriate parking in North Berwick High Street causes problems for both the flow of traffic in the town and access to local businesses. Parking fines issued by East Lothian Council’s parking attendants are called Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).

“If someone receives a PCN, they can choose to pay or challenge it.”
