WOODEN camping pods at a Scripture Union campsite have been given the green light.

The campsite, between Whitekirk and Scoughall, has been a regular visiting place for campers from the national group for more than 60 years.

Six tents are available on the site for 10 week-long camps between mid-June and September.

However, Scripture Union Scotland has now been given the go ahead by East Lothian Council to replace the tents with wooden camping pods.

A report from East Lothian Council’s planning department noted there had been no objections from members of the public.

It reads: “When the pods are not in use in the winter months, they will be stored in the main buildings of the campsite.

“The only service to the pods will be via temporary electrical cable.

“Existing toilet and shower facilities are within the main buildings of the campsite.

“If in the event that the lease for the campsite was not renewed then the pods could be removed completely from site.”

A supporting statement from Scripture Union Scotland outlined the reasoning behind the change, including the changing accommodation expectations among young people (P5-S6).

Scoughall Farm has been used as a campsite by Scripture Union Scotland since the early 1950s.

The supporting statement reads: “Thanks to the generosity of the Dale family in allowing Scripture Union to lease the land, generations of young people from around Scotland have enjoyed being able to enjoy affordable seaside holidays.

“It has proved popular with parents wanting their children to have a break from social media (as there is poor mobile phone reception)!”
