A SECOND bid is being made for new CCTV cameras at Dunbar Harbour.

Dunbar Harbour Trust had plans thrown out by East Lothian Council earlier this year.

The new plans, lodged with East Lothian Council, show two cameras and two network antennae on Lamer Island, beside the east wall of Dunbar Battery.

Lamer Island Battery is an 18th-century ‘D-plan’ bastion of squared sandstone rubble construction, listed as being of special architectural or historic interest, Category B.

It was built as a civil defence outpost and has subsequently had various uses, including as an infectious diseases hospital in the 19th century and a military hospital during the First World War.

The original proposals were turned down by the local authority as it was felt they would be “an incongruous feature”.

Dunbar Harbour Trust had applied for planning permission to “address requests from the fishing community and generally improve safety and security coverage around the harbour”.

However, planning officers for East Lothian Council rejected the proposals, ruling that the two cameras would not be an attractive addition

The revised proposals show the cameras would be a few metres to the east of the site previously proposed.

Dunbar Harbour Trust has carried out work to bring the Battery back to life and provide access to it for all.

It is currently in use as an interpretation building and amphitheatre.
