DELICIOUS hot food is being served up to those in need throughout Dunbar.

A daily meals service has been launched to help those struggling during the coronavirus crisis.

Trained chefs are cooking up meals ranging from shepherd’s pie to curries and apple crumble, which are then being delivered throughout the town.

Pippa Swan, chairwoman of the town’s community council, described the project as “wonderful”.

She said: “I had the idea but I have really only been watching what other communities were doing.

“I became aware of an elderly couple who were running out of steam and were not eating properly.

“If, as a community, we have this service available, it might just lift a burden from some families.”

Mrs Swan noted there were a number of companies who delivered ready meals but many were struggling to cope with the extra demand placed on them due to the coronavirus crisis.

Talented chefs from catering company Thomas Franks, who work at Belhaven Hill School, stepped in and have been cooking up a storm using kitchens at the nearby Bleachingfield Centre and Loretto School, Musselburgh.

The project also received a generous boost from Mungoswells Mills, near Drem, who donated 56 kilogrammes of flour.

Mrs Swan said: “The recipients can make a donation if they feel able to do so but it is at cost.”

A main course and a dessert can be provided throughout the week.

Already, the scheme, which has also involved Home-Start East Lothian, has seen more than 300 meals delivered to households.

The project is targeted at those who have been affected by coronavirus restrictions.

The meals are delivered in containers so the delicious dishes can be heated, either by microwave or oven.

Mrs Swan was pleased to say she had received feedback praising the service and describing it as “wonderful”.

Councillor Norman Hampshire, who represents the Dunbar and East Linton ward, was pleased to hear the project had proven successful.

He said: “Resilience groups in Dunbar have done an amazing job protecting individuals and families at this difficult time.”
