PLANS for a 5G mast in Galashiels have been lodged with Scottish Borders Council (SBC).

The application would see the 17.5-metre steel pole placed on the verge of the town’s King Street, on land owned by the council.

Residents are now able to submit their views on the proposal, put forward by Harlequin Group on behalf of EE Ltd.

Galashiels councillor Euan Jardine said: "I believe it is important for our local economy that we are on level terms with other towns throughout the country in regards to 5G provision.

"It will also have some positive aspects for recreational usage and help to usher in advancements in technology that will change a lot of how we go about our daily lives."

Mr Jardine added that he had not been approached by any residents about the application.

Meanwhile, his ward colleague Harry Scott told the Border Telegraph he was not aware of the plans.

Mr Scott said: "I would need to study the application and the circumstances around it before coming to any conclusions."

The application, ref 20/00417/C67, can be viewed on the council website.
