THEY were born nearly 90 years and more than 200 miles apart.

But, that hasn't stopped one Renfrewshire schoolgirl from doing her bit to honour a fundraising veteran.

Ten-year-old Holly Queen is determined to complete 1,000 laps of her Lochwinnoch garden in a bid to coin in vital cash for the NHS after being inspired by Captain Tom Moore.

The 99-year-old war veteran gained worldwide attention when he raised more than £28 million for the health service by walking 100 laps before his 100th birthday.

Lochwinnoch Primary pupil Holly has now raised more than £1,200, smashing her original target of £100, after deciding to take on the challenge when she discovered she shared a birthday with Captain Tom.

Dad Scott Queen, 46, told The Gazette: "She's watching a lot of the news because she wants to keep a journal on it. One of her teachers told her she is living through history just now.

"With watching it and trying to keep up with what has been happening, she saw the Captain Tom thing. She was following him and felt that by having the same birthday she could do something similar.

"My wife Kirsten phoned me at work and said Holly has had a new hair brained scheme. By the time I had come back, she had put the stakes out and had already done over 100 laps.

"As well as myself, her aunt and uncle are doctors as well and one is an intensive care doctor. So she is quite aware of the situation.

"She wanted just to raise a couple of hundred quid but she has done very well so far and raised over £1,000.

"She hopes to have done 1,000 by her birthday on Thursday and feels she had to contribute something to the effort and the current situation."

Holly started her challenge earlier this month and has been supported by sisters Iona, 13, and eight-year-old Zoe as she fits in her laps between school lessons at home.

Every penny raised will go to NHS Charities Together and Scott is just delighted to see her doing her bit to help others.

"We are very proud of her," he said. "She has had lots of support from the headteacher and her teacher and she is just delighted.

"Holly is quite proactive with what she does and when she gets an idea she is quite determined to do it and we are just delighted to do it."
