A WHITECRAIG restaurant boss is continuing his donation scheme for East Lothian Foodbank during the coronavirus pandemic.

After closing its bar and restaurant doors to customers drinking and dining, Graham Blaikie, owner of the Mercat Grill, is now bringing its dishes to the doorsteps of locals with a new takeaway service, as well as providing a way for people to safely give much-needed produce to East Lothian Foodbank.

He said: “We are facing a monumental time as a county, country and world. Everyone has their role to play and we are trying to adapt and help others as much as we possibly can at the Mercat Grill, by retaining our staff’s jobs and adapting our business to offer customers our fresh, homemade cuisine, delivered to their door.

“But also providing what we think is vital – an opportunity for anyone ordering from our new takeaway service to donate very-much-needed food products, which we will collect from you and donate to East Lothian Foodbank, which helps so many poverty-stricken people across the region.”

He added: “Simply leave any donations you can spare, particularly tinned vegetables, potatoes, meat, fish, fruit or long-life fruit juice, on your doorstep and our driver will collect these when they drop off your delivery.

“We desperately want to help those in our community that are in crisis. Let’s all work together to get through this incredibly challenging time. Stay well and stay safe.”

The Mercat Grill, on Whitecraig Road, is offering takeaways Thursday-Sunday (pre-order from 2pm for deliveries 4-9pm – last orders 8.30pm). Food can also be collected. On offer are starters, mains, side dishes and their special children’s menu, as well as drinks (from specialist beers, wine, gin and whisky to soft drinks). Those wishing a takeaway on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday can call, pre-order and pay when they’re open on a Thursday to Sunday, and they’ll arrange this at no additional cost.

There are deliveries to Whitecraig, Wallyford, selected areas of Dalkeith, Musselburgh and Inveresk. Other areas, such as Tranent, Prestonpans and Port Seton, are available on request (depending on driver availability). Delivery is £2.50 and a minimum spend of £15 is required.
