Shops are closing. Newspaper sales are falling. But we’ve chosen to keep our online journalism free because it’s so important that the people of Glasgow stay informed during this crisis.

STAFF from Costa cafe stores in Glasgow came together to donate all fresh produce and other hygiene supplies to NHS workers before closing this week.

Vanessa Miller, 26 from Bishopbriggs, arranged to have four weeks worth of fresh milk and cakes as well as hand sanitiser, tissues, cups and coffee making facilities donated to staff working in the Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS workers in the city station.

Costa announced earlier this week that it will close all stores for at least four weeks due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and many staff are on furlough.

Georgia Jenkins, a 21-year-old Barista Maestro from the George Square Costa store, said: "It was such a good idea to give the stock away and not to let it go to waste.

"When David saw the boxes and donations he was so emotional" she added. "We are all just doing what we can do help, and everyone can do a little bit. That's what the community spirit is about and we have to help each other."

Vanessa, who is the assistant manager of the George Square store, brought stock from Costa coffee shops on argyle street, Glasgow Central, Sauchiehall street and others to give to NHS workers.

Lucky for Vanessa, her dad David Miller works as a paramedic with the Scottish Ambulance Service. He was brought to tears when he saw the size of the donation the stores had arranged.

He said: "I'm sure our colleagues will welcome that gladly - especially the sanitiser and the towels. It'll go a long, long way."

Costa closed at the start of the week in line with Government orders, but not before pledging free coffees for NHS workers. They have since donated 250,000 free coffees to workers across the country

Costa Coffee's CEO Jill McDonald said: "At Costa Coffee our number one priority is the safety of our store teams and customers. As the need to support social distancing increases, we have taken the decision to temporarily close our stores.

"We will do our best to keep Costa stores open in hospitals where we will continue to provide free takeaway coffee for the next two weeks to the NHS workers who are at the forefront of this crisis."
