A NUMBER of events in East Lothian have been cancelled amid concerns surrounding coronavirus.

The entire East of Scotland Football League card has been suspended, meaning none of East Lothian's football teams will be in action for the rest of the month.

Meanwhile, two concerts planned for later this month have also been cancelled.

Hadley Court Singers were due to perform Dvorak Mass in D at St Mary’s Parish Church, in Haddington, next Wednesday (March 25), with a second concert in North Berwick’s Abbey Church on March 28.

However, the group has decided to postpone the concerts and said: “It is our intention to perform these pieces at a date later in the year so watch this space for new dates.”

A spokesman for the choir told the Courier on Thursday evening: “We had an EGM at last night’s rehearsal, and the choir decided that it would be best to suspend rehearsals for the remainder of the term due to many of our members being high risk for the virus.

“Even if we were in a position to perform on the advertised dates, we were concerned that we would be singing to empty venues – a cost that a small choir like us cannot afford financially.

“It was brought to the choir’s attention by our director, that he had attended what was a sell-out concert at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh over the weekend but the venue was only half full due to no shows.”

On Friday, Yester Estate also announced the cancellation of their Easter Trail, which was planned for April.

A statement read: "Following the Scottish Government latest advice regarding Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, Yester Estate will have to cancel our Easter Trail on Saturday, April 11, 2020."

At the same time, East Lothian's largest venue, The Brunton, is continuing with its upcoming entertainment.

A spokeswoman for the Musselburgh venue said: "The Brunton has been monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 and continues to implement precautionary measures.

"The Brunton’s performance schedule is continuing to be presented in line with current official guidance.

"The safety and health of our staff and visitors continues to be our number one priority.

"We will update our customers as and when we receive further official guidance and will act accordingly. Thank you for your patience at this time."

Dunbar Community Council was also due to meet on Monday evening but was cancelled due to the virus.

A fundraiser in aid of Athelstaneford Parish Church, which was due to take place next Wednesday (March 25), has also been postponed.

So far, 20 people in the Lothian area have tested positive for coronavirus, with that number rising every day.

Yesterday (Friday) also saw Scotland's first death as a result of coronavirus, with an elderly person who was being treated in the Lothian area passing away.
