A TRANENT man who assaulted a woman by punching her to the head has been jailed.

Gordon Shields, of Caponhall Drive, also breached a court order by contacting the woman after he had been ordered not to by a court.

Shields was told not to approach or contact the woman or enter Whin Park in Cockenzie when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on January 8.

But he broke the bail conditions just five days later when he turned up at the Cockenzie street in January 13.

He then approached the woman before attacking her by punching her to the head and then placing his hands around her neck and compressing.

Shields also repeatedly shouted and swore during the violent incident, while shouting threats of violence towards the woman.

Shields denied the allegations and he stood trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week, where he was found guilty of all charges.

Sheriff Fiona Tait sentenced Shields to 18 months in custody.

Shields was found guilty of breaching bail conditions by contacting the woman, assaulting her, and shouting and swearing at Whin Park, Cockenzie, on January 13.
