BUSINESSES and county residents should look out for fake notes, police have warned.

The warning comes after counterfeit notes were used to buy goods at two North Berwick stores.

Aldi and Tesco were both targeted on Sunday January 5 by a male who presented counterfeit Bank of Ireland £50 notes to staff.

He is described as white, large build, 30-39, with a ginger beard.

Enquiries to identify the man are ongoing.

Police have advised that the notes in question bare the serial numbers A066378.

East Lothian Police issued a statement saying that officers would like to remind the public and businesses to ensure that they carefully check and examine any paper notes they receive to ensure that they are genuine.

It read: “If you are handed or suspect you are in possession of a counterfeit note, you should retain this and contact police immediately via 101.

"If you have any information which may assist with our enquiries please contact us 101 quoting incident number 1090 of 06/01/2020.

"Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
