ROADWORKS on the section of the A198 which crosses the A1 near Tranent will begin on Monday, closing that part of the A198 for several evenings.

There will be a full overnight closure of the A198 between the two roundabouts at the Bankton Junction. Drivers wanting to cross the bridge which travels over the A1, linking Tranent to Prestonpans and Cockenzie and Port Seton, will face a lengthy diversion.

Joining and exiting the A1 at the junction will still be possible.

From Monday until next Saturday (December 14), “essential expansion joint replacement works” will be carried out between the hours of 10pm and 6am each night.

Closure of the bridge footpaths will also be required while the work is under way.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycles under 50cc looking to cross the bridge will be marshalled safely across by the on-site team.

A198 southbound traffic will be diverted to take the first exit at the roundabout to join the A1 in an easterly direction towards Gladsmuir Junction.

Traffic will be directed to take the exit at Gladsmuir Junction and, at the roundabout, will take the third exit onto the B6363.

At the following roundabout, traffic will take the third exit to join the A1 but in a westerly direction towards Bankton Junction.

From there, traffic will exit at Bankton Junction and take the second exit at the roundabout to rejoin the A198.

Meanwhile, A198 northbound traffic will be diverted to take the first exit at the roundabout to join the A1 westbound.

Traffic will proceed towards Dolphingstone and will exit at the next junction.

From there, traffic will then take a right turn onto the A199, crossing the A1 and will take a further right turn to rejoin the eastbound carriageway of the A1.

Traffic will follow this route to take the exit at Bankton Junction and at the roundabout will take the first exit to rejoin the A198.

All works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.

This scheme has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services and East Lothian Council.
