THE Cancer Research UK charity shop on North Berwick High Street is celebrating 30 years of fundraising.

The shop first opened in October 1989 and has raised over £4 million since then.

A celebration event was held on October 23 at Cake Cafe.

Guests included two volunteers who had been involved with the shop since it first opened.

Madeleine von Schrenk, the store’s assistant manager, said: “The amount of money we have raised over the years is all down to the hard work of the volunteers and the generosity of the people of living in and around North Berwick."

The shop’s manager Barbara Doukakis lost her husband to bladder cancer in 2008 at the age of 50.

His death made her, a mum-of-two, determined to do everything she could to prevent other families from losing loved ones.

She said: “My husband was too young to die and is missed every day by all our family.

“I’m fortunate to work in such a special, caring shop. So many of the customers and volunteers I meet share their own experiences of cancer.

"Sadly, cancer touches almost everyone at some point in their life, whether as a patient, family or friends.

“I’d like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers and customers who have contributed so generously over the years towards making our Cancer Research UK shop in North Berwick a success.

"It’s good to know we’re making a difference.”
