A TRIBUTE event in honour of Tranent comedian and charity founder Scott Glynn was a side-splitting success.

Ward councillor Colin McGinn, who organised the event, said it was an outstanding celebration of the life and work of one of East Lothian’s favourite sons.

The highlight of the day was that Scott was able to attend and perform despite his health issues.

Scott, the inspirational leader of the Walk With Scott Foundation, announced his retirement from the after-dinner speakers’ circuit in July on health grounds.

The announcement came shortly after he received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his services to health and charity.

Walk With Scott has raised more than £300,000 for local good causes.

His tribute event took place at the Eskmills venue in Musselburgh.

More than 400 people attended and they roared in celebration when the man himself walked in and saw a sea of Hawaiian shirts – paying tribute to Scott’s own favourite working dress.

The six-hour-long event is believed to be the largest line-up of after-dinner speakers ever held.

Jokes and stories at Scott’s expense were told, much to his delight.

Among the 26 speakers at the top table were Peter Martin, Joe Camay and Scott’s good friend and fellow speaker Eric Davidson from Newtongrange, who Scott performed alongside on the day.

He also sang Take Me Home, Country Roads, which has become an anthem of his and the Walk with Scott family.

Mr McGinn said: “It was a fantastic day, an outstanding celebration of the life and work of Scott Glynn and the fact that he was able to join in made it even better.

“He hasn’t been able to do very much lately because of his health.

“When Scott arrived, more than 400 people raised the roof with the welcome they gave him.

“There were a few tears. It really allowed Scott to see the love for him in the county.

“The event had the largest line-up of after-dinner speakers ever held, people that Scott has known and worked with for over 25 years were there.

“There was six hours of speaking, jokes and stories, most of which were at Scott’s expense, but he was quite happy with that.

“We will never have another one quite like that. It was sad that it was because of Scott’s diagnosis.

“We were lucky enough to be able to supply Scott and his family with some happy memories which to be honest have been in short supply recently.”

A ladies’ tribute event will also be held at Royal Musselburgh Golf Club on Sunday. Scott’s wife Carol will be attending. All tables have now sold out.
