TWO motorists were taken to hospital following a crash on a bridge yesterday (Wednesday) which closed a key route between Tranent and Ormiston for six hours.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the head-on collision in icy road conditions on the B6371 at Puddle Bridge, north of Ormiston, at about 8am.

The 19-year-old southbound Corsa driver and the 21-year-old Fiesta driver, who was travelling north, were both hurt in the incident and were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, say police.

Passing members of the public stopped to offer assistance to the young men and contacted emergency services.

Buses had to be diverted following the road closure. The route was re-opened to traffic at about 2pm.

The road had not been gritted as East Lothian Council's winter maintenance programme does not start till tomorrow, November 1.

Sergeant Jill Kirkpatrick of Police Scotland would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash and has not already spoken to police.

Anyone with information or anyone who has dash cam footage should contact the force's Edinburgh Road Policing Unit on telephone number 101, quoting incident number 0463 of October 30.
