A FORMER Mexican restaurant in Musselburgh could be turned into “a modern premium bar” with a beer garden and outdoor TV screen.

Star Pubs & Bars, which owns the High Street premises, has submitted a proposal to East Lothian Council to carry out alterations to the building.

The company hopes to change the use of land at the back to form a beer garden, outdoor seating, an outdoor TV screen and pop-up bar. Also planned is the erection of a pergola.

Mexican restaurant Habaneros, which opened in the premises selling “street food” in December 2016, closed in July this year.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs & Bars said it was hoped that a new licensee would take on the premises.

She added: “Our plan is to create a modern premium bar offering great food throughout the day and to create a terrace for alfresco dining. The name will change but it is too early to say what that will be. We have submitted a planning application and will be in a position to provide more details in a few months.”

She said the proposed investment followed on from another recent refurbishment project involving Star Pubs & Bars at The Seaglass Inn, Port Seton.
