POLICE attended the coffee shop at the Tolbooth in Musselburgh following a report of a break-in at about 7.35pm last Monday.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said a security alarm was activated, adding: “Nothing appears to have been stolen and inquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.”

A fire crew from Musselburgh was deployed after a ‘smoke cloak’ in the premises was also set off during the incident which caused a fog to issue from the High Street building. The Tolbooth and Old Town Hall is one of the town’s oldest buildings much of it dating to around 1590, although over the centuries, it was destroyed by fire, rebuilt, altered and added to, reflecting changing social and political circumstances.

At different times, it has been a court house with police cells that can still be seen, burgh council chambers, town hall and community hall.
