A STRAY football forced the temporary closure of Haddington’s swimming pool – just a fortnight after it opened following a refurbishment.

The Aubigny Sports Centre’s swimming pool had been closed from April until last month as part of a £340,000 makeover.

However, it was temporarily closed again on Monday thanks to an errantly kicked football.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council told the Courier the pool was closed to the general public from about 7am to noon.

She added: “A football had been kicked onto the roof of the Aubigny outwith the knowledge of the staff team which caused an obstruction in an external downpipe, resulting in a small leak in the changing room area.

“The issue was quickly fixed and remedial action is being taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.

“The pool reopened by lunchtime on the same day.”

During the pool’s planned closure earlier this summer, essential maintenance and internal décor works were carried out.

The two pools were drained, with a new light, modern, bright ceiling covering the outdated wood cladding.

Improvements were made in the changing rooms as well, with the pool and surrounding area given a deep clean.

The facility is one of East Lothian’s original sports centre and opened its doors as Haddington Swimming Pool in 1974.
