LAST-MINUTE bargains and unpredictable weather have encouraged a surge of Glaswegians to head for the sun – with the number one destination being Spain.

Glasgow Airport is gearing up for a hectic weekend with 130,000 expected through their doors between July 11 and 14.

Barrhead Travel has found Glaswegians are still in love with Europe, with five Spanish destinations in their top 10 for 2019 summer holidays.

With school holidays well underway and last-minute bargains to be had, the Glasgow-based travel group has reported Saturday, July 13 is set to be the busiest day for sun-seeking holidaymakers heading for warmer climes.

  • Tenerife
  • Orlando
  • Barcelona
  • Reus
  • Dalaman
  • Alicante
  • Antalya
  • Cancun
  • Genoa cruise departure

Jet2.com and TUI have added extra capacity on some of their most popular routes, according to Derek Provan, chief executive of Glasgow Airport.

He said: “With the Fair fortnight getting underway, Glasgow will be particularly busy this weekend with many holidaymakers jetting off to popular sunspots.”

Although Majorca remains the number one destination with Glasgow holidaymakers, Orlando is edging its way up the list due to competitive pricing and the popularity of the entertainment resorts on offer. 

Turkey has also seen a surge in popularity due to the value it offers, largely thanks to the strength of the pound against the lira.
