FIRE crews have rushed to a substation blaze in Cambuslang as homes are left without power.

The incident is currently taking place just off Glasgow Road and close to the India Palms restaurant.

Images posted online show thick black smoke billowing from the substation.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted to the incident at 6.36pm. Two engines were sent out and crews are still at the scene.

Scottish Power has said on its website just after 8.30am: “There is a power cut in the G72 and G73 postcode areas of Cambuslang and Rutherglen. We did not know in advance there would be a power cut and became aware of this at 6:44pm.

“Our team has managed to restore power to a number of properties in the area and are still working to repair a damaged substation affecting the rest of our customers without power. 

“We now expect all power to be back on as quickly and as safely as possible in stages by 3:00am. If this information changes then we will make every effort to contact you. 

“We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”
