A MUSSELBURGH man who robbed a woman of her handbag has been ordered to pay the victim compensation.

Ben Hastie attacked Boguslawa Czjkowska and made off with her belongings at the town’s Millhill Lane in March.

Hastie, of Millhill, pulled the woman to the ground when he seized the handbag before running away.

Hastie, 18, was soon caught by police and he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court from custody earlier this year and was released on bail.

He pleaded guilty last month to the attack and he returned to the dock for sentencing last Thursday.

Sheriff Adrian Cottam placed the thief on 18 months of supervision and ordered him to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Sheriff Cottam also told Hastie he must pay Ms Czjkowska £500 in compensation.

Hastie pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms Czjkowska by seizing her handbag, causing her to fall to the ground, and robbing her of her handbag at Millhill Lane, Musselburgh, on March 30.
