PRE-USED plastic bags have inspired a budding fashion designer to create a stunning garment which will go on display next week.

Ellie Thomson is among the Edinburgh College of Art students who will showcase their work at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh next Thursday (May 23).

The cutting-edge creations have been designed by the students as part of their fashion show Front Row, sponsored by Cazenove Capital.

The runway show takes place in the Grand Gallery, with every audience member given a front-row seat.

Ellie’s voluminous blue and yellow womenswear collection is covered in prints created using pre-used plastic bags.

The student, who grew up in Gifford before moving to the Capital, said: “My work is all sustainability driven and I have explored creating my own textiles using materials that would be going to waste.

“There are plastic bags and denim of-cuts that have been used to create water resistance on the denim. It is promoting longevity and thinking in a more sustainably driven process.”

The former Knox Academy pupil is in her final year of studying for a BA (Hons) in fashion at the college.

Last year, Ellie received funding through the Nurturing Talent Fund to develop her own clothing line.

Following the show in Edinburgh, she will head to Graduate Fashion Week in London to promote her designs to industry professionals.

Work on the garments for the Edinburgh fashion show has been ongoing since September.

The 21-year-old told the Courier it had been a hectic few weeks, with the final degree hand-in taking place last week.

She said: “It has been very busy in the build-up to the degree hand-in and the process of finishing the final garments.

“They were very long hours. We tend to be in from 8am until 10pm but last week there were extended hours.

“It was open until 2am – though I didn’t stay quite that late!”
