A SUPERMARKET will shut for nearly three weeks ahead of a half-million-pound refurbishment.

The Co-op on Hopetoun Drive is set to temporarily close from Sunday before re-opening on May 9.

The revamped shop will offer a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, healthy foods, meal ideas, wines and essentials.

Vicki Mains, regional manager for Co-op, said: “We are delighted to be undertaking such a significant investment in Haddington and we’re confident that the improvements will help us to better serve the community. It’s an exciting time for the whole team.

“Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum. Our ambition is to ensure the store is a local hub, a real asset for the community.

“We also want shoppers to know that they can become a co-owner and member of their Co-op. Our members make a difference locally and simply by swiping their membership card when they shop with us they are raising much-needed funding for organisations in their area who contribute to improving local life.”

A shop has been at the junction of Hopetoun Drive and Hawthornbank Road since shortly after the Second World War, with Co-op being in place for about 15 years.

The store brings a funding boost locally through Co-op’s Membership scheme – members receive a five per cent reward on the purchase of own-brand products and services, with the Co-op donating a further one per cent to good causes.Causes in the area currently being supported include Gifford Community Association, Blooming Haddington and Lothians Out Of School Care Network.

Councillor Tom Trotter, Haddington and Lammermuir ward member, was pleased to see the commitment to the business.

He said: “Any business that is looking to expand here is more than welcome.

“It is a well-used shop and they have taken that into account.”
