WALLYFORD'S new public library, named after a local writer, will open at the new primary school tomorrow (Monday).

The facility has been provided as part of the new Wallyford Primary School project at Futures Way to meet the demands of major new house building in the area.

The library bears the name of Margaret Oliphant, a 19th-century writer from Wallyford.

Born on April 4, 1828, she died on June 20, 1897.

Alister Hadden, chairman of Wallyford Community Council, has given support about local historical events which are reflected in the new building.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: "The community library has been named the Margaret Oliphant Library.

"The graphics on the internal windows, the old ship wheel from the former school badge and the external brickwork reflect aspects of Wallyford’s history.

"This will be further developed in partnership with the community council and library over time."

The library, which replaces the former library at Fa'side Buildings, has a separate entrance and exit when open for the public on: Monday and Tuesday, 2pm to 5pm; Thursday, 2pm to 7pm; Friday, 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm; Saturday, 10am to 1pm. The library is closed on Wednesdays.

Outwith these hours, the library is available for the school to use either through class visits or for individuals to use. Library staff are available to arrange activities such as book clubs or how to research projects.

This is a "unique situation" for East Lothian as, until now, there have been separate staffed school libraries in the secondary schools and public libraries in the community.
