A MAN “clinging onto the grass” on the side of a cliff has been rescued by emergency services.

Coastguard teams from Dunbar and North Berwick were called out at about 6pm yesterday (Thursday) after the man got stuck on the cliffs, near Dunbar's Winterfield Golf Club.

A spokesman for North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team said the man was “clinging onto the grass”.

He added: “Coastguard rescue officers set up an immediate rope rescue, deploying a cliff technician to secure the individual.

“The team thereafter set up our recovery system, bringing both the rescue officer and casualty back to the cliff top.

“The person was uninjured and somewhat embarrassed by their predicament.”

Dunbar’s volunteer RNLI crew was also called out to assist the Coastguard from the water, with police officers also in attendance.

A spokesman for Dunbar Coastguard said: “The casualty did not require medical attention and was taken home by police.

“It transpires that he had been walking on the coast below and had tried to climb back up before getting stuck around five metres from the top.

“Do not attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so.

“Do not attempt to climb cliffs as a short cut back to the top and do not attempt to self-rescue yourself if you get into difficulty.

“Please enjoy your coastal walk, but make sure you and yours come home again safely.

“As ever, our message is, ‘Keep safe, but if you see anybody in trouble or if you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard’.”
