DOZENS of new affordable properties in Ormiston have been given the green light.

The 37 new homes off the village’s Tynemount Road will be part of a larger development by Walker Homes. In total, 110 properties are being built at the site.

East Lothian Council’s planning department gave the scheme the go-ahead last week, with 17 affordable houses and 20 flats to be built on the site.

The housing will be a mix of council homes and mid-market rentals.

Each of the new homes will be classed as affordable housing, with the 20 flats comprising of six semi-detached two-storey flatted buildings with two bedrooms, and four semi-detached two-storey flats with one bedroom in each.

Ten of the houses will be semi-detached, with three terraced properties and two detached homes.

Sixteen of the properties will have three bedrooms, with the remaining house containing two bedrooms.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said: “We are delighted to be creating more affordable housing units in Ormiston.

“At least 27 of these will be new council houses.

“We are currently in discussion with another affordable housing provider to potentially deliver 10 of the units for mid-market rent, creating a mixed tenure development to meet the varied needs of our communities.”

Meanwhile, more than £300,000 will be split between the village’s primary school and Ross High School in Tranent to ensure that there is sufficient educational capacity to serve the housing.

A sum of £141,673 will go towards Ormiston Primary School, with a further £161,949 going to the secondary school.

Haddington and Lammermuir ward member Councillor Shamin Akhtar was delighted with the additional housing. She said: “It is good news that permission has been granted for 27 council houses and 10 affordable homes for rent in Ormiston.

“These are much-needed homes and will be welcomed by the local community.”
