THREE East Lothian schools place in the top 100 in Scotland based on the percentage of pupils gaining five or more highers.

The figures have been released by The Times, ranking all 339 state secondary schools in Scotland.

Top of the class for East Lothian was North Berwick High School, which placed 27th with 55 per cent of pupils achieving the five higher mark.

Second in the county was Knox Academy in Haddington in 65th with 45 per cent, while Dunbar Grammar School also finished in the top 100, placing 90th with 41 per cent.

Musselburgh Grammar School placed fourth in the county, 187th overall with 31 per cent, followed by Preston Lodge High School in Prestonpans (253rd with 25 per cent), then Ross High School in Tranent (272nd with 23 per cent).

Top of the table overall was Jordanhill School in Glasgow with 83 per cent, followed by Dunblane High School in Stirlingshire (76 per cent) and Mearns Castle High School in East Renfrewshire (75 per cent).

At the other end of the table, ranking last in the country was Northfield Academy in Aberdeen with seven per cent. Wester Hailes Education Centre in Edinburgh and Lochend Community High School in Glasgow were just above on eight per cent.

As for schools in neighbouring council areas, Boroughmuir High School placed highest in the Edinburgh and Lothians, finishing sixth with 71 per cent. Peebles High School was top in the Borders, 20th with 57 per cent, while Linlithgow Academy pipped North Berwick High for the best in the Lothians, coming 24th with 56 per cent. Best in Midlothian was Lasswade High School Centre, 86th with 42 per cent.
