A TRAFFIC island could be placed on the road outside Tranent’s Polson Park – weeks after an 80-year-old woman was knocked down nearby.

East Lothian Council is considering introducing the safety measure on Edinburgh Road.

Last month, an elderly woman was struck by a car in the area and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with shoulder injuries.

The crossing would be near the bus stop used by people travelling from Tranent into Edinburgh.

The idea of a traffic island was highlighted at the town’s community council meeting last Tuesday.

Councillor Kenny McLeod, who lives nearby, was hopeful a solution could be reached. He said: “It is people getting the bus to Edinburgh. You get a lot of people crossing the road from the Bankpark side – that is where there is a problem.”

Mr McLeod also noted that traffic islands had been introduced further along the street, near Stair Park and Polson Gardens, for people to cross.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said: “We were aware of interest in a possible traffic island at this location prior to the incident.

“The process for the introduction of such a measure is to assess the road layout (ie not at a bend), possible usage and whether other crossing points are nearby.

“At this stage transportation officials are investigating the suitability of a new traffic island at this location but not at planning stages.”
