EAST Lothian's MSP Iain Gray is meeting with the Transport Secretary this week after there was more train disruption in East Lothian this morning.

Problems on the Edinburgh-North Berwick line have been a regular problem in recent years, including overcrowded trains – some so busy that commuters are unable to board – cancellations and trains running with fewer carriages than intended.

A number of trains today ran with only four carriages rather than six due to "maintenance requirements", ScotRail said, while the 6.47 train from North Berwick to Glasgow Central terminated at Edinburgh Waverley due to a broken down train.

Mr Gray said: “I have regularly raised the various problems on the North Berwick line with successive SNP rail ministers for over a decade.

"I have lost count of the number of commitments and promises made on planned improvements for the service, mostly to no avail.

"However, as long as the problems persist I will not stop pursuing them with both ScotRail and the Government.

"I will certainly not leave Mr Matheson in any doubt about what rail users in East Lothian think of the service he is presiding over and how badly it is letting them down.”

Passengers have been less than pleased with the problems on the trains, voicing their complaints across social media.

Pauline O'Brien said on Twitter: “Both mornings this week the 7.18 from North Berwick has terminated at Waverley rather than Haymarket. Knock-on effect is I get to work later than planned, who compensates me for time lost both mornings?”

While Eric McDonald said: “Constant disruption since start of the year on ScotRail Musselburgh services. Only three days without issues. Cancellations, breakdowns, no train crew, overcrowding, no room to board train... free weekend travel no consolation.”

Last week, a passenger fainted aboard a North Berwick to Edinburgh train due to overcrowding as only three carriages made up the 7.55 train.
