EAST Lothian MP Martin Whitfield has called for a ban on the sale of fireworks to the public to stop the “moronic minority” from using them dangerously.

Speaking during a Westminster debate, Mr Whitfield said nearly 800 people in East Lothian had signed a petition calling for the ban and a move towards organised displays only.

And he revealed he had been contacted by many constituents who had voiced frustration at the widespread use of fireworks outwith the expected dates or displays.

He said: “Nearly 800 people from East Lothian supported the e-petition calling for a ban on the sale of fireworks to the public and a move to organised displays only.

“In addition to this, many constituents have contacted me regarding their frustration about the widespread use of fireworks outwith specific controlled dates and the fear and distress this causes to pets and families.

“Fireworks are also increasingly being used in mindless attacks on emergency service workers, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reporting several attacks on crews at Bonfire Night this year.

“I believe that the alarming distress caused to pets and other animals, coupled with the increasingly dangerous use of fireworks by a moronic minority, means it is time to stop the sale of fireworks to the public.”
