YOUNGSTERS with autism are invited to join a special workshop at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC).

On Sunday, doors will open for autism-friendly family workshop Store Hunters with access to a quiet, safe space.

GMRC holds all the exhibits from Glasgow's collection that are not currently on show in the city's museums.

Alicia Watson, Learning and Access Curator with Glasgow Museums, said: “Given the success of our autism friendly events at Riverside Museum we’re really keen to encourage this audience to visit other museums in the city.

"Sunday’s autism-friendly workshop promises to be a fun afternoon in a relaxed, calm, spacious environment.

"We are very much looking forward to welcoming families who may never have explored the treasures of GMRC before."

There will be three special spaces set aside in the resource centre.

One will have soft lighting and comfy cushions; another for getting messy with arts and crafts activities focused on animal mask making; and a third where guests can touch some of the objects.

Ms Watson added: "This time [the objects will be] feathery and furry friends from the animal kingdom, such as a wren, weasel, fox and even a tiny bee. "Those who want to explore more can take up our trail challenge and search for 12 animals in our natural history pod."

The event runs from 1.30pm to 4pm and to book email gmrcbookings@glasgowlife.org.uk or 0141 276 9300

Glasgow Museums has around 1.4 million objects in its collection, one of the finest museum collections in Europe.

Only a small proportion is on display at any one time but Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC), which is the main store for the museums' collections, is open for visitors to explore through a range of tours, talks and activities for all ages, including school visits and events for families with children.

Glasgow is the only city in the UK to have a publicly accessible store.

It is free to visit GMRC, but all visits must be booked in advance, except the weekly Store Hunters sessions.

These family drop-in sessions take place every Saturday from 1.30pm to 4pm.
