COUNCIL leader Susan Aitken has joined with condemnation of the UK Government's failure to give cash to help fire-hit firms in Glasgow.

Ms Aitken claims she met with Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell in July and was told the UK Government was committed to supporting the city to recover from the Glasgow School of Art fire.

Now, following the Chancellor's decision to support fire-hit Belfast and ignore Glasgow, Ms Aitken has written to Mr Mundell to say she is "disappointed" by the lack of support for Glasgow.

In July, Paul Sweeney, Labour Glasgow North East MP, asked Mr Mundell to set up a relief fund.

Then, last month, SNP Glasgow Central MP Alison Thewliss asked Chancellor Philip Hammond for help.

The leader writes in her Evening Times column today: "I have written to David Mundell calling on him to honour the commitment to Glasgow he made to me.

"Our future vision for Sauchiehall Street requires assistance from all levels of government.

"And the businesses in the area need the stability that a rejuvenated Sauchiehall Street would give.

"I hope these calls for match funding are echoed by colleagues across the political spectrum – particularly the Tories.

"They must call on their party colleagues at Westminster to keep the promises made to the city.

"If they don’t their claims to support businesses on the street appear cynical and hollow."

In his Budget last week, Mr Hammond revealed £2million for businesses affected by a fire that ripped through a Primark stores in the historic Bank Building in Belfast city centre.

The moved was described as a bung, given the Tories depend on the DUP's 10 MPs to give it a majority in the House of Commons.

The Scottish Government has given £5m to a Glasgow fire fund.
